UK VISITOR VISAS

UK Visitor Visa Solicitors

If you want to visit the UK for a holiday, to see family or friends, for certain business activities or for another permitted purpose, you may need to apply for a UK Visitor Visa before you travel.

The UK Standard Visitor Visa, sometimes referred to as a UK Tourist Visa, allows eligible visitors to come to the UK for a temporary stay. The requirements depend on your circumstances, the purpose of your visit and how long you intend to stay.

At Halliday Reeves, our specialist Visit Visa Solicitors have over 20 years' experience helping people prepare UK Visitor Visa applications. We can advise you on the requirements, help you identify the supporting documents you need and prepare and submit your application to the Home Office.

A Visitor Visa application needs to demonstrate clearly why you are coming to the UK and that you meet the relevant immigration requirements. We will assess your circumstances carefully and help you present a clear and well-supported application.

Who Can Apply for a UK Visitor Visa?

You may be able to apply for a UK Visitor Visa if you want to come to the UK temporarily for a permitted purpose. This can include coming to the UK for a holiday, visiting family or friends, undertaking certain business activities, short-term study or other activities permitted under the Standard Visitor Visa route.

Whether you need to apply for a visa before travelling will depend on your nationality and circumstances. If you do need a visa, your application must satisfy the Home Office that you are a genuine visitor and meet the relevant UK Visitor Visa requirements.

The Genuine Visitor Requirement

To qualify for a UK Visitor Visa, you will normally need to show that:

  • you are genuinely coming to the UK for a permitted purpose;

  • you intend to leave the UK at the end of your visit;

  • you have sufficient funds to support yourself during your stay without working or accessing public funds;

  • you can pay for your return or onward journey; and

  • you will not use frequent or successive visits to make the UK your main home.

The Home Office will look at your circumstances as a whole when deciding your Visitor Visa application. This can include the purpose and proposed length of your visit, your finances, previous travel and immigration history, and your personal and economic circumstances in the country where you live.

Showing That You Intend to Leave the UK

An important part of many Visitor Visa applications is demonstrating that your visit is genuinely temporary.

Evidence of your circumstances outside the UK may therefore be important. Depending on your situation, this could include your employment or business, studies, family responsibilities, property or other financial commitments.

Previous travel can also be relevant, particularly where it demonstrates that you have complied with the conditions of visas and returned home at the end of previous visits.

Financial Requirements

There is no fixed amount of money that every applicant must have to qualify for a UK Visitor Visa. Instead, the Home Office will consider whether the funds available to you are reasonable for the proposed trip, taking into account the likely cost of your travel, accommodation and living expenses.

Your trip can also be funded by another person, such as a family member, provided the relevant requirements are met. In those circumstances, evidence of the person's relationship to you, their financial circumstances and the support they are providing may be required.

Supporting Your UK Visitor Visa Application

There is no single document checklist suitable for every applicant. Your supporting evidence should reflect your own circumstances and the purpose of your visit.

This may include evidence of your finances, employment or studies, accommodation arrangements, travel history and the reason for your visit. If you are visiting family or friends, information from the person you are visiting may also be relevant.

Our specialist Visit Visa Solicitors can assess your circumstances, identify any potential issues and advise you on the evidence needed to prepare a clear and well-supported application.

Steps for your visit visa application

We start with a free assessment to understand your circumstances and confirm your eligibility before moving forward.

We will then provide you with a personalised documents checklist, which will then enable you to gather the required supporting documentation, for your application.

Once you have returned the supporting documentation, we will then review them and provide you with some feedback.

Whilst you are working on the feedback we have provided; we will complete a first draft of your visa application and our representation letter.

As per our feedback, once you have provided any additional documentation, we will then send you the draft visit visa application to review. Once you are happy, your application can be submitted.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long can I stay in the UK on a Visitor Visa?

A Standard Visitor can usually stay in the UK for up to six months. The length of your permitted stay will depend on your circumstances and the purpose of your visit. You must leave the UK at the end of your permitted stay and should not use frequent or successive visits to make the UK your main home.

How much money do I need for a UK Visitor Visa?

There is no fixed minimum amount that you must have. The Home Office will consider whether you have sufficient funds for the proposed visit, taking into account its length and likely costs, including travel, accommodation and living expenses. Your existing financial commitments may also be relevant.

Can someone else pay for my visit to the UK?

Yes. Another person, such as a family member, can pay for some or all of your travel, accommodation and living costs. You may need to provide evidence of your relationship with them, the support they are providing and their ability to meet those costs.

Can my husband, wife or partner apply for a UK Visitor Visa?

Yes, depending on their nationality and circumstances, a husband, wife or partner may be able to apply for a UK Visitor Visa to make a temporary visit to the UK. They will still need to satisfy the Home Office that they are a genuine visitor and intend to leave the UK at the end of their visit.

Can I apply for a long-term UK Visitor Visa?

If you visit the UK regularly, you may be able to apply for a long-term Standard Visitor Visa lasting 2, 5 or 10 years. This allows multiple visits during the validity of the visa, but each individual visit will normally be limited to a maximum of six months. A long-term visa does not allow you to use repeated visits to live in the UK.

Can a child apply for a UK Visitor Visa?

Yes. Children can apply for a Standard Visitor Visa, but each child needs their own application. The application should include appropriate information about their travel, accommodation and care arrangements, including who they will be travelling with where relevant.
